Nautical Nellies, Victoria, B.C.

It was suggested to us to try this establishment for dinner. We took them up on it and it was pretty good. Don’t ever let anyone tell you people don’t go out for dinners anymore. It was packed on a Wednesday night. Easy to find, on Wharf Street, close to the Inner Harbour.

Don ordered the Seafood Hot Pot. It was huge and all kinds of seafood in it. Big pieces not some chopped up mini “guess what it is” food. He absolutely loved it. An O’Doull’s was a good pairing.

I ordered the Scallop Dinner.  Our server, Terri, suggested I choose this one dinner over another as the scallops were a bit larger in size. It comes in a round flat-bottom bowl with the scallops around the outer edge. It had a great almost succotash in the center of the bowl. It was delicious. I have to mention, however, if you want large scallops, just ask my husband to prepare them. Just sayin’. I enjoyed a glass of chilled Pinot Gris. It was a good choice.

We could not leave without a dessert and, of course, it had to be the Crème Brulee. We have had this dessert all across Europe and everywhere in between.

Road 13 Winery – Oliver, B.C.

We had tickets to attend at a “Bubbles” breakfast at the Road 13 Winery. We have lived here for over 2 1/2 years and had never been here. (Shame on me). http://road13vineyards.com/

There were approximately 20 people attending – some on vacation, some had been here several times prior, a group were members of a yacht club in Vancouver….now this is the desert, so that was a bit of a stretch., don’t ya think?

We were shown down to the stroage/processing room where we sample the sparkling wine “Chenin Blanc“. This was a true champagne and lovely to drink. I  bought one, I might add. I thought I had become a wine snob, living here, but this winery just woke me up. Mick and his son gave a terrific explanation of how wineries do things, grapes grown, grapes imported- absolutely love it.

Now we go up into their dining room for breakfast. Here, we have three glasses lined up and they sample a Chardonnay (lovely, not “bitter or sharp”), a beautiful red and their winner, Malbec. ( I bought this one as well).

The breakfast was a beautiful fruit platter on the table, and plated was a lovely smoked salmon with two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, squash and pea shoots. This was a winner! I never eat smoked salmon but this….I almost licked the plate. The Chef was the owner from Miradoro Restaurant at Tin Horn Creek. http://www.tinhorn.com/Contact-Us/Miradoro-Restaurant

One thing we have noticed over the past couple of years when you attend functions like this…you go in the door as complete strangers and then, as if by magic, conversations start and you find that you have so much in common…woodworking as a hobby, things made, what to do if you retire, trips made, the reason we moved here…. Wow! What a great way to spend a Sunday morning

As if requested, the sun came out and the valley was at its best.

Thanks Road 13, we will return. I really like what  you do, how you explain the process and the breakfast you present.
