Masthead Restaurant, Cowichan Bay, BC

The other night a few seniors went with Janey (Janey’s Got a Bus) to the Masthead Restaurant.

Wow…this is one fine dining establishment. It is over-looking the water, so, so elegant on the inside and comfortable in ambience.

Our server tonight was Tara and her partner, Mark, was the bartender. Tara is so attentive, but quietly so. She took our drink order, the dinner order and answered everyone’s questions.

Dinner was super. Don had the steelhead Trout dinner, two of us had a bowl of mushroom soup (absolutely THE best mushroom soup from any restaurant I have ever been in) and the warm beet salad. This was delightful. Beautiful in presentation and just enough so you could eat it all. One lady ordered the Fish  and Chips and said it was the best she had ever eaten. The last meal ordered was the evening special. Braised Beef ribs, vegetables, gravy. Trust me.

All meals were well prepared, presented and enjoyed by all.

But we are not yet done. One dessert ordered was a Pumpkin Cheese Cake and Don and I shared the Vanilla Creme Brulee.  Again, if they would let us lick the plate, we probably would have.

This restaurant was new to us but it was so enjoyable. They do know what they are doing.

Cactus Club, Nanaimo

Everyone who reads my reviews know how much I love this restaurant. Well, here we go again and it is quite different I promise.

Our server, Braeden, we have had before and he remembered us. He took our order for our drinks and the next person to arrive was Kaitlyn with our drinks. She called me by name and as we chatted for a moment, she also told me what I eat every time. HA! says me, I will order something different.

Okay, I have not been able to eat spicy anything for many, many years as I was badly ‘burned’ by over-spiced chicken and my face swelled up.

I thought I would order the Blackened Cajun chicken sandwich and split the order with Don. I have, in another restaurant ordered a blackened chicken salad and it was only on the edge of the meat and I could simply remove it.

You think? When it came out, I had two bites and felt nothing. Don said it was hot but…… The third bite almost tore my throat out. I tried to tell Don to bring my throat back and he laughed. The chicken was entirely coated (both sides) and I had no voice at all. TRUE.

I went from high pitch to blank air. I am not blaming the kitchen for this, but it took about 4 hours to get my voice back. So if anyone out there can’t eat spicy food, be careful, that’s all.

It was really quite funny. Don jokingly said, bring her another one! (referring to the fact I had no voice) it just kept coming in and out.

Lesson learned, I will continue to eat the one and only dish I always have. Can you guess?
