Crow & Gate English Pub,South Nanaimo/Ladysmith

Our Sundays are a means to see more and learn more about where we live. Don and I have been here about 4 years now and we are taking Kelly round to show her what the area has to offer. Guess what? We are learning as well.

Sunday we got a few really pleasant surprises. One of them was this pub. OMG! It is so beautiful, the look of the building, adjoining home,  gardens, are really old English style.

We ate inside as there was a long wait list to eat outside in the gardens and were blessed with a wonderful server, Amber. This young lady had great patience and explained the different dishes to us, what were favourite with the clients, explaining anything we asked her about and it was so appreciated.

We each ordered a beverage and then the fun began. We all ordered something different. Don ordered the Scotch Eggs and it comes with two sides: he ordered the cup of soup and a garden salad.  Kelly ordered the Beef Dip and it came with two sides: she ordered the potato salad and green salad. I, on the other hand, ordered the Crow and Gate Cheeseburger sans the onion. Guess what? It came with two sides. I ordered the green salad and oven baked baby potatoes. YUM!

My only thing was the spice in the sauce on my burger. My lips felt like they were so swollen and stinging. The burger was, itself, very good and the potatoes were better than fries.

Kelly’s beef Dip was about 3 inches high with beautiful, thinly sliced meat. The potato salad tasted only of mustard and was about 2 tablespoons worth in size.

All in all, it was really nice and, again, I can’t stop raving on how beautiful this establishment is and certainly well received by the public. I know we will return.

Thank you, this was a lovely surprise.

Black Bear Pub, Nanaimo

Sometimes accidents turn out to be winners. We were running a few errands yesterday and came across this little pub. It was lunchtime and we all thought we would pop in and see what it had to offer.

We opted to sit outside on a HUGE two tiered deck. All tables were appropriately spaced and the view was really something. You could see the lake from where we were and the green space was like a park.

Now to the good stuff. We ordered beverages as in water, soda water and coffee and had to take our time on choosing what we wanted to eat. After several changes in each of our choices we went for it.

Don ordered the Beef Dip which was so big, he brought half of it home and ate it for supper. Kelly ordered the Black Bear Burger and I ordered the Mushroom Cheese Burger. OMG! They were soooo delicious and the crumbs left behind proved it.

Kelly ordered a Coors to go with her burger and I opted for the Pinot Grigio and it had to be one of the better wines I have had in a restaurant. Not sharp but really nice. I was shocked that the brand was Naked Grape.

Thanks you Kelly for lunch and yes, we could make this a favourite place to ‘pop in’. Our server Kathleen was pleasant, informative and very likeable.
